This illustration comes from the Yuan play "Tang Emperor Minghuang Listening to Rain on Firmiana Trees on an Autumn Night" (唐明皇秋夜梧桐雨), compiled in "Yuan Dynasty Plays" (元人雜劇選). It is based on Bai Juyi's (白居易) epic poem "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (長恨歌), which tells the story of the emperor and his beloved concubine Lady Yang.
This print depicts a scene from the second act, as the beautiful Lady Yang dances elegantly. Her movements are graceful and her sleeves fluttering gently, the viewer thus also sharing in the beauty of this occasion. |
